I get it mama, you’re busy and learning a new language along with your child seems overwhelming! It doesn’t have to be overwhelming, in fact here are some practical ways to overcome the overwhelm and make learning a new language fun!

While it’s true that learning a new language can be overwhelming, taking small steps is key to success. Usually when you begin learning a new language there is a lot of momentum because there is so much excitement. Once the excitement has dwindled so has the studying. Start with just learning 10-15 minutes of Spanish per day. Make learning Spanish fun and easy by using the Duolingo app that is free and gamifies learning. Perhaps you could listen to music in Spanish or watch your favorite movie with Spanish subtitles.

There are some great tips that can be implemented from the book, “Atomic Habits by James Clear” For example, a practice called habit stacking. Turn an everyday habit and stack your new habit onto it. Let’s say you are already in  the practice of drinking coffee each morning, so while you drink your coffee spend 5-10 min studying Spanish.

Another thing the book suggested was to make your new habit easy and fun. While it’s good to occasionally challenge yourself by learning a lot of vocabulary you will benefit more from just learning 10 new words a week. Make learning Spanish easy by using songs and games is a great way to make learning fun.

Another great way to maintain a new habit is to make it accessible. Perhaps put your Spanish material on your kitchen table before you go to bed and when you eat your breakfast the next day it will be easy to pick up the book and learn a few new vocabulary words. Label things around your house with index cards with your new vocabulary and practice using the new word in place of the English word. For example, “Go to la sala to read your libro” (Go to the living room to read your book”

Learning Spanish with your child can significantly enrich your homeschooling journey. By adopting small, enjoyable, and routine-integrated learning strategies, you’ll discover that this challenge is not only manageable but also a delightful addition to your day. The aim is to relish the process and the moments shared with your child, fostering a love for learning and language.
